I’m being accused but I didn’t do anything wrong…now what?
Your phone rings. It’s a number that you don’t recognize.
You answer the phone and you hear some of the most terrifying words that you’ve ever heard – “Hi. This is Detective Jones from the Police Department. I’d like to talk to you. Will you come and meet with me at the station?”
Your heart races. Panic sets in. You have no idea what this could possibly be about – or maybe you have some idea – and you don’t know what to do. Now what?!
You say that you’ll call him back then you call a lawyer right away.
These first hours and days
following this fateful phone call can make a world of difference in the investigation and could make or break the decision to charge you with a crime.
Many people think that it’s best to go in and talk to the police to show that they have nothing to hide.
This is never a good idea without first talking to a lawyer. Our experience has shown that when a client talks to the police without us the situation goes south quickly.
Do not try to do this alone. Talk to a lawyer experienced in dealing with police and interrogation techniques. Discuss what your options are and what your next steps should be. Then let your lawyer take the reins and handle things from there.
